Does the National Do Not call registry work?

i want an anwser from an experienced user who is not going to link me to some stupid adress. i have recently signed up for the National Do Not Call Registry, I recently accidently did an online server and ended up with a bunch of Telemarketers because of my stupid mistake of giving out my number, if anyone has ever used this service, Does It Work? & If So PLEASE SHARE YOUR STORY
